Researchers identified hypertension hospitalizations through the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Kids’ Inpatient Database, years 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2006. In total, there were 71,282 pediatric hypertension-related hospitalizations from 1997 to 2006, generating a cost of $3.1 billion in total charges.

In addition to the increased number of hypertension-related hospitalizations, the percent of all pediatric hospitalization charges associated with hypertension increased from 2.2 percent to 4 percent from 1997 to 2006.
