Patients who have experienced one of the six qualifying cardiovascular events are eligible for enrollment in the program. Qualifying events include: an acute myocardial infarction within the preceding 12 months, a coronary artery bypass surgery, current stable angina pectoris, heart valve repair or replacement, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) or coronary stenting, or a heart or heart-lung transplant.
The program is made up of 72 sessions, compared to an ordinary, 32-session cardiac rehab course. It focuses on the differences healthy eating, regular exercise and a healthy mindset can have on an individual and the belief that a healthy lifestyle is within their grasp.
The Pritikin sessions will offer a wide variety of classes to teach patients how to live healthier, including healthy cooking classes and instruction on healthy food shopping and meal planning, as well as continued guidance to help individuals embrace a healthy mindset and lifestyle.
St. Joseph is the first hospital in the state to offer an ICR program.
