CMS investigated the hospital last December and January after a patient’s family complained a contracted dialysis nurse was talking on a cell phone while performing patient care duties. Federal officials ultimately discovered 12 areas of noncompliance, including lack of oversight of water testing procedures during hemodialysis; failure to ensure competency by dialysis employees; failure to ensure staff received key vaccinations and testing and more.
One of the hospital’s corrective action steps includes “definitive expectations” for quality and safety for DaVita, with whom the hospital has entered into a management agreement for kidney care. The plan also includes measures to measure staff members’ competency.
