Opelika-based East Alabama Medical Center will hold a community flood relief drive for Louisiana hospital employees affected by flooding, according to Tuscaloosa News.

The medical center will be collecting cash, household items, toiletries, cleaning and school supplies, pet food, cases of water and other items until Sept. 13, according to the article. The donations will be sent to seven hospitals in Baton Rouge, La.

Laura Eason, chaplain of EAMC, said the idea came to her after reading a story on Facebook about a Tennessee hospital that sent supplies to hospital employees affected by the flooding.

“A hospital is the center of the community. What better example than to have our hospital spearhead this community-wide event,” said Ms. Eason. “Those hospitals are the center of their communities there. Schools and businesses can close during a time like this, but hospitals can’t close.”
