The study found that only 30 percent of EDs got most of their patients seen by a physician within recommended time frames; only 13.8 percent triaged most patients who needed to see a physician within the target time of one hour; and just under one-quarter of EDs admitted patients needing admission within the target time of four hours.
“These delays in care and in moving admitted patients into the hospital are connected to systemic issues within hospitals,” wrote Leora Horwitz, MD, of Yale-New Haven Hospital, the lead author.
