The system will be used as an adjunct to the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses’ standard protocol of manual counting. UNC had previously participated in a multi-center study on using medical technology to prevent and detect retained surgical objects. Interim conclusions were that radiofrequency detection can speed identification of missing sponges.
