Mercy Health has suspended mammography services at its hospitals in Tiffin and Perrysburg — both in Ohio — after accreditors found issues with the quality of images during a review at the facilities.
The American College of Radiology, which accredits mammography programs on behalf of the FDA, reported image quality issues after reviewing a random sample of patients who received mammograms at the facility over the past 26 months, the Cincinnati-based system said in an Oct. 28 statement published on its website.
“Mercy Health takes this matter very seriously and understands the significance of this news,” the health system said. “We are fully cooperating with our partners to address their concerns, and both Mercy Health — Tiffin Hospital and Mercy Health — Perrysburg Hospital have already taken many of the steps towards revitalizing and enhancing their services so that they can return to providing high-quality mammography in the future.”
Mercy said it is notifying affected patients by mail with information on appropriate next steps for follow-up care.
“If you receive such a letter, this does not necessarily mean that the mammogram results received by you and your provider were wrong,” the health system said. “The letter explains why you are receiving it, what options are available to you, and who you can contact if you (or your provider) have questions.”
Mercy is still offering mammography services across 10 other locations in the region.
The ACR has also raised concerns about the quality of mammography services at Joplin, Mo.-based Freeman Health System. On Oct. 1, the accreditor suspended services at the system’s Women’s Pavilion for the second time in a year.
