Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital has been named the inaugural recipient of The Joint Commission’s Healthcare Innovation Award, which recognizes hospital and health systems with a strong culture of innovation that advances care quality and patient safety.

The academic health system was selected for its work to improve care coordination, expand predictive tools that identify high-risk patients earlier, and implement technologies that enhance safety, capacity management and clinical decision-making, according to a Sept. 23 news release from Tampa General.

Tampa General’s initiatives include a partnership with Palantir to reduce patient placement times and identify early signs of serious conditions such as sepsis and heart failure, as well as a hospital-at-home program that has lowered costs and reduced readmissions. Other efforts involve the use of ambient listening technology to lessen documentation burden, and predictive tools in the operating room to improve efficiency and safety.
