Researchers randomly assigned a group of mice to five groups, which were each exposed to different genres of music during heart transplantation: no music, opera, classical music, New Age music or one of six sound frequencies. The mice’s exposure to the music lasted from the day of transplantation until six days after surgery.

The researchers found mice that were exposed to opera and Mozart music had significantly longer survival times compared to mice exposed to single-sound frequencies or New Age music. The researchers concluded opera and classical music may trigger certain immune responses that improve recovery after surgery.
