A survey administered to medical students at a major university hospital between 2009 and 2010 found most NSIs are related to vein puncture, surgical procedures and improper instrument disposal.
Researchers also found NSI events were underreported by 53 percent.
The survey showed a curriculum incorporating structured clinical examinations was associated with fewer NSIs. Introducing safe instruments into the curriculum also reduced NSIs by 50 percent.
Researchers suggest clinical examinations and safe instruments may help reduce NSI incidents. Additionally, reporting procedures should be integrated into undergraduate training, they suggest.
