Emporia, Kan.-based Newman Regional Health and Burlington, Kan.-based Coffey Health System, have partnered through a shared services agreement designed to enhance the availability and continuity of specialty care in rural settings.

The partnership launched with general surgery services provided across both hospitals and aims to expand specialty coverage in response to community needs. Orthopedic services will grow through coordinated scheduling and shared clinical expertise, according to a Dec. 12 news release.

While orthopedic care is already available at Newman Regional, reestablishing it at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington is still in development.

The collaboration builds on Newman Regional’s affiliation with Lawrence-based LMH Health OrthoKansas to extend access to orthopedic services for Coffey County residents. Physicians and advanced practice providers from both hospitals will support care delivery.

The partnership reflects a broader trend of rural hospitals coordinating to maintain local care delivery and reduce patient outmigration.
