An eCQM is a clinical quality measure that is specified in a standard electronic format and is designed to use structured, encoded data present in the electronic health record. This year, CMS is requiring hospitals to report at least four eCQMs, meaning the Pioneers in Quality program is coming at the perfect time for many hospitals beginning with the reporting process.

David W. Baker, MD, executive vice president of The Joint Commission’s Division of Health Care Quality Evaluation, expressed excitement over the launch of the Pioneers in Quality program.

“Through a variety of educational offerings, we will work with individual experts and healthcare organizations that have successfully used eCQMs for quality measurement and improvement and share their lessons learned so other hospitals can meet this challenge,” said Dr. Baker. “We hope all Joint Commission hospitals will take advantage of the Pioneers in Quality resources.”
