Mumps outbreak at University of Dayton continues

On Monday, Public Health – Dayton and Montgomery County confirmed seven cases of the mumps at the University of Dayton (Ohio).

On April 19, health officials confirmed two cases of the mumps and two more cases under suspicion in students at the university. Additionally, nearby Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, confirmed one case of the mumps on April 20.

The University of Dayton's Student Health Center will provide students with free vaccinations until May 6.

Renascent cases of the mumps have sprung up on several college campuses in recent months, including Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., Boston University, SUNY Buffalo in New York, and the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.

The CDC reports that two doses of the vaccine are 88 percent effective at preventing the mumps.
