Mumps spread to Boston University

Boston University confirmed three cases of the mumps in undergraduate students Wednesday, according to local ABC affiliate WCVB.

The first student lives on campus and was diagnosed before spring break, which was held March 5 to 13. The two other cases were reported during spring break among students who live off campus. None of the students are allowed to return to class until their five-day infectious period ends, according to WCVB.

BU is the third university in the Boston area to report a mumps outbreak in recent weeks. Nine cases have been confirmed at Harvard University in Cambridge and two have been confirmed at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

According to WCVB, health officials are working to uncover any connections between these three sites with outbreaks.

Potential mumps cases were recently reported at SUNY Buffalo in New York. Confirmed cases have been reported at University of Kentucky in Lexington and three universities in Indiana.
