A new study in the July issue of the American Journal of Infection Control finds that women with pre-pregnancy diabetes are at a higher risk for contracting a postpartum case of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
The study analyzed data adjusted for factors such as age, race, hospital size, hospital teaching status and geographic region from the Nationwide Independent Sample Database.
Results show that women with pre-pregnancy diabetes were 3.4 times more likely than those without diabetes to develop a case of postpartum MRSA, while those with gestational diabetes showed no increased risk of developing the infection.
