Michigan hospital says its inclusion on Medicare penalty list for high infections was a mistake

Administrators of Forest Health Medical Center in Ypsilanti, Mich., say CMS made a mistake by rating the hospital very well for hospital-acquired conditions, yet including it on the list of hospitals penalized for having high rates of HACs, according to The Ypsilanti Courier.

Forest Health Medical Center appeared on CMS’ list of 721 hospitals across the U.S. receiving penalties of reduced Medicare payments by 1 percent of the 2015 fiscal year, per the Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program.

According to the report, CMS acknowledged the error, though the hospital may have to wait until the fall when the next list is published before Forest Health’s placement is corrected.

Trevor Dyksterhouse, Forest Health Medical Center’s president, said the hospital actually scored in the top quartile of hospitals, but was placed in the lowest quartile because of an error that occurred calculating the score, according to the report.
