The group selected hospitals for the list based on lower infection rates, higher survival rates for high-risk procedures, decreased length of stay and fewer readmissions, to name a few. Other metrics include maternity care, evidence of a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors and appropriate staffing to ensure quality of care.
This year, 94 hospitals were included on the list — four more than last year — and were broken down as follows:
- 2014 Leapfrog Top Hospitals: 59 hospitals
- 2014 Leapfrog Top Rural Hospitals: 26
- 2014 Leapfrog Top Children’s Hospitals: 9
In 2014, Massachusetts doubled its number of Top Hospitals with a total of 10 and, for the very first time, hospitals in Alabama, Kentucky and Rhode Island received the recognition.
