Half of the monetary gift was donated by Craig Duchossois, chairman and CEO of The Duchossois Group, an investment and operations firm in Chicago. The second half of the donation was funded by The Duchossois Family Foundation.
University of Chicago Medicine officials said the funds will be used to create the Duchossois Family Institute: Harnessing the Microbiome and Immunity for Human Health project. The $100 million donation will fund 10 years of researchers’ work analyzing the interaction between bacteria and the immune system and provide more insight on how to prevent food allergies and ways to use food and probiotics to prevent obesity and improve the effectiveness of cancer drugs and antidepressants, according to the report.
Officials said instead of creating a new facility to house the institute, faculty, staff and new laboratories will be housed in existing spaces to ensure the donation is used specifically to fund research initiatives, according to the report. Any money made by the institute will be funneled back into additional research initiatives.
The family had previously given the University of Chicago Medicine $37 million in donations, including a $21 million gift in 1994 to create the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, which maintains several outpatient specialty clinics, diagnostic centers and treatment facilities.
