Study Suggests ACO Face Significant Challenges if Fee-for-Service Remains an Option

A recent study by a professor of economics at the University of Zurich published in Health Affairs suggests that accountable care models could face resistance from providers and consumers if fee-for-service models remain an option.

Specifically, the study, which examined providers and consumers in Switzerland, identified the following challenges:

•    General practitioners will require a pay increase of up to 40 percent before they are willing to accept coordinated care; and
•    Consumers wanted a substantial reduction in premiums to accept these models.
