Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke’s University Health Network is pausing labor and delivery services at its Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, Pa., due to “unanticipated staffing shortages.”
The maternity service pause takes effect Dec. 1, according to a post on St. Luke’s website. St. Luke’s acquired Grand View Hospital in July, making it the system’s 16th hospital.
The decision to halt labor and delivery care was made after unanticipated physician resignations, a St. Luke’s spokesperson told The Morning Call. During the pause, Grand View will work to recruit employees and improve labor and delivery services, according to the spokesperson. Meanwhile, St. Luke’s said employees affected by the pause at Grand View have been given the option to transfer to Upper Bucks.
All births will be redirected to the health system’s Upper Bucks campus, about eight miles north of Sellersville. St. Luke’s said the Upper Bucks campus is “fully prepared to accommodate” additional volume and ensure “uninterrupted, high-quality care.”
At least 28 hospitals and health systems across the U.S. have shuttered maternity services in 2025, citing financial challenges, low volumes and a lack of OB-GYN staff. In Pennsylvania, more than one-quarter of hospitals closed their obstetrics services between 2010 and 2022, according to a study published July 7 in Health Affairs.
Becker’s has reached out to St. Luke’s Health Network and will update this report if more details become available.
