Physician License Verification Legislation Introduced in Illinois

If recently introduced legislation passes in Illinois, physicians will have to verify their academic, employment and disciplinary records through an independent service before being given a license in the state, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Currently, Illinois state officials check the National Practitioner Data Bank and the Federation of State Medical Boards for prior actions taken on a physician’s license before issuing a license to a new physician. However, the databases may not always be up-to-date with recent warnings and issues, according to the Chicago Tribune.

About 12 states require physicians submit a Federation Credentials Verification Service, which confirms a physician’s record. Illinois will join those other states if the legislation is passed, according to the report.

The legislation was filed Tuesday by state Rep. Mary Flowers (D-Chicago).
