Maryland university gets $1.75M to open new med school

Baltimore-based Morgan State University received a $1.75 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to develop a medical program, according to an Aug. 28 university news release.

Here’s what to know:

1. Morgan State, the largest historically Black college or university in Maryland, is currently developing its public, nonprofit Doctor of Medicine program.

2. The grant will be distributed over two years, with the newly established Morgan Medical School Planning Group working to shape the medical school’s blueprint. The university is working with state, federal and philanthropic partners to create curriculum, facilities, governance and a funding model.

3. The grant is part of the foundation’s commitment to increase investment in medical schools at historically black colleges or universities and other minority-serving institutions.
