California Senator Introduces Bill to Prevent Hospital Foundation From Employing Physicians

Sen. Dean Florez (D-Calif.) plans to introduce a bill aimed at preventing City of Hope cancer hospital in Duarte, Calif., from severing ties with California Cancer Specialists Medical Group and forming a foundation to employ other physicians, according to a report by the Sacramento Bee.

City of Hope recently announced that it intends to employ physicians through its own not-for-profit medical foundation. When the California Cancer Specialists Medical Group, which contains almost all of the hospital’s physicians, refused to join it, the two entities exchanged lawsuits, according to the report.

City of Hope said its foundation would provide more responsive medical care, while the independent medical group claimed the move is just an attempt to bypass California law forbidding hospitals to directly employ physicians.
