Healthgrades Awards 260 Hospitals "2014 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence"

Hospital and clinician ratings website Healthgrades has released its "Hospital Quality Clinical Excellence Report 2014: Finding the Keys to Quality," which names 260 hospitals to its 2014 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence list.

Hospitals named to the list "exhibit comprehensive and consistent quality across a range of conditions and procedures," according to the website. The report states the hospitals as a group had a 26.4 percent lower risk-adjusted mortality rate across 19 evaluated conditions than the rest of the nation's hospitals considered as a whole.

To calculate mortality rates, Healthgrades evaluated conditions and procedures associated with cardiac surgery, coronary intervention, critical care, gastrointestinal conditions, heart attack, heart failure, neurosurgery, pulmonary conditions and stroke. Complication rates were calculated from a selection of joint replacement and treatment, prostate, spine, vascular and gastrointestinal procedures.

Though all states had at least one hospital eligible for the award, several states had no hospitals named to the list, including Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Wyoming and the District of Columbia.
