He earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and completed a fellowship in health services at Dartmouth. Dr. Birkmeyer also served as chief of general surgery and editor for the Dartmouth Atlas of Healthcare. Later, Dr. Birkmeyer became the director of the Center for Healthcare Outcomes & Policy at the University of Michigan.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Birkmeyer has participated in several research projects on performance measurement and strategies for reducing hospital quality and cost variation. He currently chairs the expert panel on evidence-based hospital referral for the Leapfrog Group.
