HCA Healthcare creates alert system to detect sepsis sooner

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare aims to detect and treat patients with sepsis sooner with the help of a home-grown alert system called Sepsis Prediction and Optimization of Therapy.

Three things to know:

1. SPOT monitors patients’ vital signs, lab results, nursing reports and other data in real time and uses algorithms to alert clinicians of patients who may be developing sepsis.

2. HCA created the alert system using data from 31 million annual patient care episodes across the 185-hospital system.

3. The alert system has been used with 2.5 million patients and saved an estimated 8,000 lives in the past five years.
