The researchers looked at clinical outcomes for 163 bypass surgery patients 30 days after PCI. The first group consisted of 60 patients who underwent PCI using a distal protection device alone, and the second group included 103 patients who underwent PCI with a distal protection device and pre-treatment with prophylactic nicardipine.
The researchers found mortality, heart attack, bypass or repeat PCI occurred in 10 percent of patients in the first group 30 days after the original PCI. In contrast, patients in the second group only saw 1 percent rates for mortality, heart attack, bypass or repeat PCI.
