Health officials first announced two flu cases in a Sussex County woman and a New Castle County woman last week. A 40-year-old woman in Kent County also tested positive for influenza B, and a 38-year-old man from New Castle County was hospitalized with the virus.

William Funk, MD, a family medicine physician based in Newark, Del., said it’s unusual for flu cases to be confirmed this early.

Health officials are expecting to see a milder 2018-19 flu season compared to last year, when the state reported 35 flu deaths and 9,000 confirmed cases.

The CDC reccomends everyone 6 months and older receive a flu shot by the end of October.
