CMS to Implement Star Rating System on ‘Compare’ Websites

Later this year and in early 2015, CMS plans to add a star rating system to the Hospital Compare, Dialysis Facility Compare and Home Health Compare websites on Medicare.gov, according to a CMS blog post, written by Patrick Conway, MD, CMS deputy administrator for innovation and quality and CMO.

Dr. Conway writes that the addition of the star rating system aims at making the quality information available on these websites easier to understand for consumers. CMS’ Nursing Home Compare website already uses the star system. “The star ratings empower consumers with information to make more informed healthcare decisions, encourage providers to strive for higher levels of quality, and drive overall health system improvement,” according to the blog post.

Also, stakeholders and partners can visit Data.Medicare.gov and use the same data that powers the Compare websites in easy-to-use formats.
