The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has proposed Medicare cover costs related to annual screening for depression for Medicare beneficiaries in primary care settings, according to a proposed decision memo.

The primary care settings should have staff-assisted depression care supports in place to assure accurate diagnosis, effective treatment and follow-up. CMS found sufficient evidence to support screening for depression in adults, which is already recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. CMS also believes the coverage for screening is appropriate for individuals entitled to benefits under Part A or enrolled under Part B.

CMS is requesting public comments on this proposal.
