AACN nurse training program improves quality, saves Banner Health $1.4M

After 16 months of participating in a nurse leadership training program delivered and funded by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, Phoenix-based Banner Health saw improved patient outcomes and an estimated $1.4 million in savings.

The AACN Clinical Scene Investigator training program focused on improving bedside reports during shift changes and care transitions, standardizing handoff tools and promoting other efficiently to reduce incidental overtime and improve staff morale.

The training program facilitated reduced readmissions for acute myocardial infarction patients and improved patient compliance with filling post-discharge prescriptions at Banner's Heart Hospital in Mesa and Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West. By implementing safe patient handling strategies, Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa saw a reduction in both patient falls and patient injuries related to patient handling.

"AACN's CSI Academy program helped us to challenge our traditional paradigms of nursing productivity to refocus and retool to meet the challenges of the current healthcare environment," said Neva Spencer, RN, DNP, senior director of professional practice with Banner Health.
