2 dead, 768 sickened in 48-state Salmonella outbreak

An additional 489 people have been sickened since June in a Salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry, for a total of 768 cases in 48 states, according to a July 19 report from the CDC.

Two people have died, one in Ohio and one in Texas, and 122 have been hospitalized. Twenty-four percent of total cases have occurred in children under five years old. In addition, five Salmonella serotypes have been added to the CDC investigation since the last update.

Contact with backyard poultry from multiple hatcheries is causing the outbreak, according to epidemiologic and laboratory evidence.
