14-day mortality, umbilical catheter use independent risk factors for A baumannii among newborns

A study, published in the American Journal of Infection Control, investigated an outbreak of Acinetobacter baumannii bacteremia among newborn infants.

Researchers conducted a retrospective, case-control study from July 2014 to July 2015 in a neonatal intensive care unit. They performed univariate and multivariate analyses with logistic regression.

Over the study period, 68 patients in the NICU were diagnosed with bloodstream infections due to A baumannii. Researchers included 41 case patients. The mortality rate was 58 percent.

Using univariate analysis, researchers found risk factors associated with A baumannii include:

• Intubation
• 14-day mortality
• Use of peritoneal dialysis and an umbilical catheter

Multivariate analysis identified 14-day mortality and umbilical catheter use as independent risk factors for A baumannii.
