Ohio's vaccination rate jumped 28% after lottery incentive; Maryland, New York follow suit

Maryland and New York are the latest states behind Ohio to roll out lotteries for state residents who get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Maryland will give $40,000 to one lottery winner daily from May 25 to July 3. One grand prize winner will receive $400,000 on July 4.

New York residents who get vaccinated between May 24 and May 28 will receive a free $20 scratch-off ticket and a chance to win up to $5 million.

The announcements come eight days after Ohio launched its lottery effort to encourage vaccinations. Starting May 26, the state will hold five weekly drawings with a prize of up to $1 million. Health officials said the state's vaccination rate jumped 28 percent from May 14-17 after Gov. Mike DeWine announced the lottery, reports The Hill. Vaccinations had been lagging among people 16 and older before Ohio launched the initiative.
