Senators call for federal probe of New Jersey nursing home

Republican senators have asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the conditions of a troubled New Jersey nursing home, The Hill reported March 17.

Woodland Behavioral and Nursing Center at Andover has been under renewed scrutiny after a report detailed further neglect.

In a March 16 letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., wrote: "Evidence suggests that Woodland has subjected its residents to egregious and flagrant conditions that have caused them to suffer serious physical and emotional harm."

The state is sending monitors to the facility amid continued complaints. CMS is giving the facility until Aug. 15 to make major changes or face termination of all federal funding.
