Brigham and Women’s 1st in New England to receive geriatric surgery designation

Boston-based Brigham and Women’s Hospital became the first hospital in New England to receive the American College of Surgeons’ Level 2 Verification-Focused Excellence status in its Geriatric Surgery Verification Quality Improvement Program.

The GSV designation requires hospitals to meet 32 quality standards for percentage of surgical inpatients 75 and older, according to a Nov. 20 hospital news release shared with Becker’s. Brigham’s Center for Geriatric Surgery met the requirements throughout its trauma and emergency general surgery, orthopedics and ortho trauma, colorectal and neurosurgery spine service lines.

Brigham and Women’s is the first healthcare institution in New England and the first hospital of its size nationwide to receive the designation, according to the release.
