5 nursing home policy updates

Here are five nursing home policy updates Becker's has covered since Aug. 23:

  1. California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Sept. 27 aimed at closing a loophole that allows nursing home operators to run a facility without receiving a license.
  2. For the first time, officials, researchers and the public can see data about who owns Medicare-certified nursing homes across nursing home locations. HHS is making more ownership data publicly available.
  3. HHS released an inaugural national strategy to support family caregivers Sept. 21.
  4. CMS and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released a joint letter Sept. 8 stating that nursing care facilities may not require a third-party caregiver to personally guarantee payment of a nursing home resident's bill as a condition of the resident's admission to the facility.
  5. HHS awarded $25 million to Illinois, Kansas, New Hampshire, American Samoa and Puerto Rico to expand access to home- and community-based services through Medicaid's Money Follows the Person program.
