Successfully pursuing the triple aim: 3 essential principles

Since proposing the triple aim framework in 2008, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement has revealed three key principles that have helped organizations implement the strategic improvement strategy.

In 2007, IHI recruited 141 organizations — including healthcare systems, hospitals, insurers, public health agencies, social service groups and community coalitions — to participate in a collaborative to implement the triple aim.

In a new study in the June 2015 issue of The Milbank Quarterly called, "Pursuing the Triple Aim: The First Seven Years," IHI drew on the experiences of its participating organizations to describe the three essential principles that, when executed, have helped successfully achieve the triple aim.

The three principles are:

1. Create the right foundation for population management.

2. Manage services at scale for the population.

3. Establish a learning system to drive and sustain the work over time.
