The report analyzed gun deaths around the country and in 50 major metropolitan areas, finding a rise in gun homicides in 2015 and 2016.
During 2015-16, 27,394 firearm homicides and 44,955 firearm suicides occurred among U.S. residents, the report found.
The researchers also reported that deadly shootings increased in all age groups nationwide and the number of suicides involving a firearm increased 21 percent from 2006 to 2016.
“It is too soon to know whether recent increases in firearm homicide rates represent a short-term fluctuation or the beginning of a longer-term trend,” the researchers said.
