Walmart opened a 100,000-square-foot central fill pharmacy in Litchfield Park, Ariz., that can fill up to 100,000 prescriptions a day for more than 700 stores across 12 western states, according to ABC15 Arizona. It is the sixth facility in the company’s central fill network.
Central fill sites handle prescription processing, including pill counting, labeling, capping and sorting, in a highly automated facility, which shifts work away from individual store pharmacies. Walmart said the model gives retail pharmacists more time for counseling, immunizations and other clinical services and has cited a study finding central fill can increase pharmacist-patient interactions by up to 30%.
By the end of this year, 90% of Walmart’s U.S. stores will be supported by central fill facilities, according to the company. Walmart opened its largest central fill facility in Frederick, Md., in May 2025. That 102,000-square-foot site can fill up to 100,000 prescriptions a day for more than 700 stores in 16 states and Washington, D.C., and the company said then that additional facilities were planned for Arizona and Missouri in 2026.
