Torrent Pharmaceuticals expands recall of hypertension drug

Torrent Pharmaceuticals is expanding a recall of its losartan blood pressure tablets after detecting trace amounts of a probable cancer-causing impurity.

The company previously recalled hundreds of lots of the hypertension drug after discovering the presence of a carcinogen.

The recall includes five additional lots of losartan potassium tablets and losartan potassium hydrochlorothiazide tablets after trace amounts of N-Methylnitrosobutyric acid were detected.

Losartan tablets are used to treat left ventricular hypertrophy and nephropathy in Type 2 diabetes patients.

Torrent warned that patients currently taking losartan should continue taking their medication, as the risk of damage to the patients' health may be higher if they don't have an alternative treatment. Patients should contact their physicians about alternative treatment before returning the recalled drug.
