The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists has launched the  ASHP Center for Next Generation Therapeutics, aimed at supporting hospitals and health systems to navigate cell and gene therapy treatments along with other high-cost therapies.

The center is set to prioritize six areas, including improving patient care and access, addressing implementation and operational challenges, enhancing workforce preparedness, developing professional resources, and shaping health system policy, governance and finance, according to a Sept. 23 news release from the organization.

The center will be overseen by a steering committee composed of clinical pharmacist specialists, medication safety leaders, revenue cycle and payer experts, investigational drug specialists, clinical executives and chief pharmacy officers.

As of early 2025, the FDA’s Office of Therapeutic Products had reviewed more than 2,500 investigational drug applications for cell and gene therapies and by 2030, over 1,500 new therapies are expected to reach patients, the release said.
