Pharmaceutical company joins healthcare blockchain consortium

Servier, a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Suresnes, France, joined Embleema's Blockchain Health Consortium as part of a new project.

Embleema is a healthcare blockchain network on which patients can securely share their personal health records. Blockchain describes a public, distributed, decentralized ledger of transactions that multiple participants can contribute to. The consortium aims to engage patient associations, life sciences companies and healthcare professionals to share digital health data stored on Embleema's blockchain for clinical research, such as drug discovery.

Under the agreement, Servier will help construct Embleema's blockchain network. Servier will host a hub on the network's servers to help ensure the security of patients' sensitive data.

The pilot will run for one year before Embleema decides whether to deploy it on a larger scale.

"A considerable amount of health data is generated every day, including by patients themselves via, for example, connected objects," Servier President Olivier Laureau said in a news release. "This data is an invaluable source of knowledge to accelerate the discovery of new therapeutic solutions. In this context, the blockchain is seen as a key technology in the creation of a more collaborative model between healthcare professionals and patients.
