Pfizer vaccine could be available for kids as young as 5 by September, exec says

Pfizer plans to file for authorization of its COVID-19 vaccine in kids as young as 5 by September or October, an executive from the drugmaker said June 30, according to Fox 5 Atlanta

Alejandra Gurtman, vice president of vaccine clinical research and development at Pfizer, said during a symposium held by Johns Hopkins University and the University of Washington: "We are planning for emergency use authorization submission for the older age group, that is the 5 to 11, in September, October of this year, and the younger group to follow soon thereafter."

The younger group includes kids as young as 6 months.

Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine is already authorized for kids as young as 12.

Children now make up about a quarter of new COVID-19 infections, according to federal data cited by The Baltimore Sun.

Officials said during the symposium that the strength of the vaccines for kids are expected to be lower than for adults, but with the same efficacy, The Baltimore Sun reported.
