Valhalla, N.Y.-based Westchester Medical Center Health Network has opened Westchester Medical Center Specialty Pharmacy to expand access to coordinated pharmacy services for patients with complex, chronic and rare conditions.
The in-network specialty pharmacy integrates physicians, pharmacists and patients to support access to specialty medications that require close monitoring, prior authorization and ongoing clinical follow-up, according to a July 13 hospital news release. It will provide services for patients receiving therapies in gastroenterology, hematology, rheumatology, oncology, infectious diseases and cardiology, with additional specialty areas planned.
Patients using the pharmacy will be enrolled in the WMCHealth Patient Management Program, which provides treatment adherence support, side-effect monitoring, provider coordination and assistance navigating insurance, copay assistance and financial aid programs. The pharmacy also offers free medication delivery to patients’ homes or providers’ offices.
The launch continues a wave of health system investment in specialty pharmacy, with systems including Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Cottage Health, Chicago-based Lurie Children’s and Charlottesville, Va.-based UVA Health building out similar programs to improve medication access and coordination for complex-condition patients.
