Four things to know:
1. The government-appointed drug affordability board will set limits on how much state and local governments pay for high-cost prescription medications. The goal is to lower prescription drug-spending in the state.
2. Barring a veto from Maryland’s governor, the board would be established by 2022.
3. The drug industry’s leading trade group, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, opposes the legislation creating the board, calling it “dangerous” and “unconstitutional.” The group said it could lead to delays and other challenges for patients.
4. The pharmaceutical industry likely will challenge the law creating the board in court.
