Medical device and drug recalls, whether voluntary or forced by the FDA, ensure patient safety. Here are five reported by Becker's Hospital Review in the last two weeks:

1. Florida compounding facility recalls all human and animal drugs for lack of sterility

KRS Global Biotechnology, a Boca Raton, Fla.-based drug compounding facility, is recalling all lots of its unexpired human and animal drugs due to lack of sterility assurance.

2. Leaking IV bags recalled

The Metrix Company, a Dubuque, Iowa-based medical devicemaker, is recalling more than 120 lots of its empty IV bags due to the potential for leaks that could cause serious infections

3. Plastikon Healthcare recalls Milk of Magnesia due to microbial contamination

Plastikon Healthcare, a drugmaker based in Lawrence, Kan., recalled two lots of Milk of Magnesia Sept. 9 for microbial contamination.

4. Hospira recalls bacteriostatic water over contamination issues

Hospira is recalling one lot of its bacteriostatic water, used to dilute or dissolve medications for injection, due to contamination concerns.

5. AmEx recalls eye treatments after FDA concerns

After an FDA inspection, AmEx Pharmacy is recalling all lots of two of its bevacizumab injectables, used to treat macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
