Active U.S. drug shortages increased to 227 in the second quarter of 2026, marking the third consecutive quarterly increase, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Nearly half of all new shortages this year involve medications made by a single manufacturer, a concentration that increases supply chain vulnerability, and the FDA’s database continues to reflect new discontinuations weekly.
The database is updated daily to reflect manufacturing recoveries, regulatory actions and how shortages are classified, not solely day-to-day availability at the hospital level.
Here are 12 recent drug shortages, according to the FDA database:
- Disopyramide phosphate capsule, extended release: Pfizer discontinued two presentations of its Norpace CR brand, in 100-milligram and 150-milligram strengths, Aug. 24.
- Liraglutide injection: Novo Nordisk discontinued its Saxenda brand, 6 milligrams/1 milliliter, Aug. 25. The product will remain available until it’s fully discontinued in January 2027.
- Mesalamine capsule, extended release: Mylan Pharmaceuticals, a Viatris company, discontinued its 0.375-gram presentation of the gastroenterology drug Aug. 25.
- Pentostatin injection: Hospira, a Pfizer company, reported its Nipent brand oncology drug currently in shortage Aug. 27, citing manufacturing delays. Recovery is estimated for the third quarter of 2027.
- Medroxyprogesterone acetate tablet: Pfizer discontinued two strengths of its Provera brand, 2.5 milligrams and 10 milligrams, Aug. 31.
- Metoprolol succinate tablet, extended release: Teva Pharmaceuticals discontinued seven presentations of the cardiovascular drug, in 25-milligram, 50-milligram, 100-milligram and 200-milligram strengths, Aug. 31, citing a business decision.
- Palovarotene capsule: Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals discontinued its Sohonos brand, 2.5 milligrams, Aug. 31.
- Potassium chloride, sodium chloride, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride injection, solution: Fresenius Kabi discontinued its cardioplegic solution Aug. 31.
- Glycerol phenylbutyrate oral liquid: Amgen discontinued two presentations of its Ravicti brand, 1.1 grams/1 milliliter, Sept. 1.
- Insulin glargine-aglr injection: Eli Lilly discontinued its Rezvoglar brand, 100 IU/1 milliliter, Sept. 1, citing a business decision. Distribution is projected to end in June 2027.
- Insulin lispro injection: Eli Lilly discontinued its Insulin Lispro Junior KwikPen brand, 100 IU/1 milliliter, Sept. 1, citing a business decision. Distribution is projected to end in June 2027.
- Insulin lispro protamine and insulin lispro injection: Eli Lilly discontinued its Humalog Mix 75/25 brand, 100 IU/1 milliliter, Sept. 1, citing a business decision. Distribution is projected to end in June 2027.
