WellCare elects former Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal to board of directors

WellCare Health Plans appointed Bobby Jindal, the former Republican governor of Louisiana, to its board of directors Sept. 24.

The Tampa, Fla.-based managed care insurer specializes in Medicaid and other government-sponsored health plans. Ironically, while Mr. Jindal has been a staunch opposer of the ACA's Medicaid expansion, the policy has been a financial boon for WellCare.

In a 2013 op-ed published in the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report, Mr. Jindal's office wrote, "President [Obama] is gradually turning the world's greatest healthcare system into the world's largest welfare system. The left has been very clear — their end goal here is to make all healthcare in America government healthcare."

Mr. Jindal's successor, Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards, expanded Medicaid in 2016. Mr. Jindal served as Louisiana's governor from 2008 to 2016.
