Vermont approves $3.5M BCBS settlement

Montpelier-based Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont gained $3.5 million after a months-long reconciliation process to settle billing discrepancies through the state's exchange — Vermont Health Connect.

Technological errors within Vermont Health Connect's billing and enrollment system in 2015 led to the payment discrepancies, reports Times Argus. The settlement covered payments BCBSVT never received in premium payments from health plans sold through the exchange. It also covered inadvertently paid claims for patients whose health coverage had been ended by the state.

The discrepancies were likely a result of data interruption between Vermont, payers and a third-party billing vendor, according to the report.

Last August BCBSVT sent a letter to state officials reporting the insurer was owed $6.2 million before the reconciliation process began.
